My
Friends, Bass Pals and Cool Stuff I Like
Here are some links
to various things that I would like to share with you,
from
my friends
and
family
to a
host
of cool media and music sites, to those all important things
like clothes and cool websites that you ought to know
about.
It's fairly random so if you have any suggestions email
them to me and I'll see if they are worthy of a mention.
The Brotherhood
Of Bass - Friends and Inspirations
Matthew
Garrison - a truly awesome bassist, musician and
all round cool guy - here's a picture of Matt and I outside
his
house in Brooklyn, Matt has many great projects happening
at the moment so visit his website to find out more online
here. You can read an interview that I did
with Matt here or
on the Talk Bass website
Tony
Grey - Originally from Newcastle bassist Tony Grey is
now a New York resident and plays with the incredible Japanese
pianist Hiromi. I recenly interviewed Tony when
he was in London with Hiromi at Ronnie Scott's - he's an amazing
player and a top guy - he has
a new solo album in the works too. Here we are backstage at
the Jazz World stage at Glastonbury 2007 when he played there
with Hiromi - it was very wet and muddy but the gig was great.
Visit Tony's website here and also see the interview I did
with Hiromi for Jazzwise.com.
Victor
Wooten www.victorwooten.com - The
Flecktones www.flecktones.com -
The mighty Flecktones lead by Béla Fleck are without doubt
one of my favorite bands ever, considering the main Tone is
a banjo legend this may surprise some of you, but anyone who
has heard Fleck play knows just how amazing he really is.
I was lucky enough to hang with Vic when he visited the UK
in 2001 - Listen to my interview Podcast with Victor here.
Laurence
Cottle - www.laurencecottle.com -
probably the greatest UK bass player to emerge in the last 20
years,
Laurence
is not just an
incredible bass virtuoso he's also a man of vast musicianship
- displayed best in his awesome BIg Band. I've been extremely
fortunate to appear on the same stage as Laurie out in
Thailand (at the2005 Koh Samui music festival) and I get
along to any gig I can when he's playing in London. Modest
and down to earth, Laurie is a truly inspiring musician
for me. Here we are the 2005 London Guitar Show
- check out his wicked Jaco tribute here.
Franc
O'Shea www.francoshea.com -
a brilliant bassist and composer Franc O'Shea is one of
the finest all round bassists/composers in the UK - he's
just released his incredible new solo project 'Alkimia'
- click here to have a listen.
Jon
Thorne - The lovely and amazing Jon Thorne - bassist
with Lamb and emerging jazz solo artist and bearded
bassist - check out Jon's website -
here's me and him at the Big Chill summer 2006.
Kai
Eckhardt - www.kaizone.com - A wonderful person
as well as a wonderful bassist Kai's big moment came when he
joined John McLaughlin's trio in the late 1980s, recording the
classic album 'Live At The Festival Hall'. I was lucky enough
to interview Kai for Bass Player Magazine and talk to him about
his fantastic jam band Garajmahal.
Jaco
Pastorius - The one and only - visit his superb official
website here.
Gary
Willis - Visit the unbelievable Gary Willis here.
Friends
Alison
Merriman - www.marksmade.com -
My gorgeous and talented girlfriend has her own website,
she also designed this one as well, she is currently
in fulltime employment but if you have liked what you
see here she is also available for freelance web design
work.
John
and Jess Scott - www.johnandjess.co.uk -
The man the legend, sometimes known simply as Scotty,
but usually as John, is a very good friend of mine
and has too many talents to mention here. Having
taken most of the pictures featured on the site so
far, John is the man behind the Glastonbury Festival's
web presence and many other superb bespoke designs.
He is an arch programmer, folk musician, and all
round polymath - if you have any database needs or
require a creative solution - John is your man, Jess
is his lovely, and understanding Jess.
Mark
Harris - Another unbelievably talented writer
and all-rounder - Mark is a well travelled man, a
veritable font of knowledge on most things relevant
to living life well - and he's a saint when it comes
to sorting out your tax return. Visit his website www.meharris.co.uk to
discover the sheer number of top (shelf) magazines
and newspapers Mark writes for - he's currently writing
regular pieces for the Independent, Times and Guardian,
among others.

God’s very own Smoothie Company. I discovered, like many
others, these incredible drinks only a year or so ago and
I am now completely hooked on them. Small but perfectly
formed they really are something else – and made from 100%
pure ingredients they are actually good for you as well,
unbelievable. They have an excellent website – if all else
fails I’ll go and work for them – they’re
amazing!
